Patagonia Lake, AZ

I took the teen to Patagonia Lake down near Nogales a couple of weeks ago. While his friends taught him how to fish and they did the summer thing kids do in Arizona, I walked around the park and took photos in 760nm. Below are some test images that turned out pretty well!

By the time I was finished, the temp was bumping 108F (that's a sweltering 42C for my international subscribers) and I was desperate for a cool place to chill out. I landed at the Visitors Center and made fast friends with the sweet lady, Ms Deb, at the desk. I showed her my photos and she liked them so much that she asked the ranger to drop by and check them out. Next thing you know, I've got a deal to display and sell some framed prints in the visitors center starting in August - no cuts or commission, just straight profit! Can you believe it!? There are apparently big plans for an art show in fall and all sorts of stuff for the handful of artists they showcase. Super excited! Fingers-crossed, more good things come of it!

  • Congratulations. This is awesome. Are these infrafred shots or black and white? My guess is the former, but I'm not sure if I have the eye to be sure.
    • Hi Dave! Great to hear from you! Thanks! Yes, these are infrared shots at 760nm. The easiest way to tell the difference is that foliage in sunny spots is super bright white and water is very dark, usually totally black. That boat shot prob would have been way too shady for a black and white without a good flash, and even then the tones would be much lower contrast. Also with infrared, foliage in the horizon is often slighly blurrier and has a dreamy haze. That's because infrared has a very narrow aperture window (around f/8-f/16) - too small and you get diffraction, too wide and the highlights are blown out. Sometimes it's just luck with the light if the entire image is super clear and bright. I'll be back on Bluesky in fall! Looking forward to reconnecting on the daily with you! Give your sweet dashie a cuddle for me and tell him I said hi! :)
