These photos were taken using two very special Nikon cameras. They belonged to Roger Cunningham, the father of my dear friend, Janet Rau. Mr. Cunningham was an avid photographer with an obvious deep interest in macro work. When Janet approached me about taking ownership of his equipment, I was beyond delighted and honored.

Any photographer will tell you that cameras have personalities. I personally believe that equipment "learns" from its longtime owners. Informed by their vision (eyes and art!), the gears and glass wear in characteristic ways, the knobs stick and glide, the buttons patina and soften from years of touch; the photographer's mind captured in the tactile feel of their camera. When Mr Cunningham's Nikons arrived, I carefully unwrapped them and held them in my hands wondering how my own vision would grow in conversation with his. I have tried to honor his spirit and interest in science by taking them to our local nature and aircraft museums. I have souped some film, with a nod to his interest in chemistry. These experiences constantly remind me that photos are a veil of sorts - gauzy layers of memory, imagination, reality, spirit, and maybe even a bit of magic.

I continue to work with his Nikons and listen as they quietly teach me many things.
